The City of Hyderabad badly needed an newer bigger airport to cater to the ever growing number of domestic and international flyers. Now the time is nearing when the brand new International Airport would be opened. Luftansa would be the first flight to touch down during mid-march 2008 followed by an Air India flight. The airport is capable of landing the world’s largest passenger jetline.
The airport, that is a public-private partnership project between GMR Infrastructure, Malaysian Airports Holding, Berhad, Airports Authority of India and the Andhra Pradesh State government, will provide world-class facilities and infrastructure. Its single terminal will be equipped with common user terminal equipment, check-in desks and self check-in kiosks.
Initially being built to handle 12 million passengers annually and 100,000 metric tonnes of cargo, in the final stage the airport will be able to handle 40 million passengers and 1 million tonnes of cargo annually. The airport proposes that almost 75 per cent of the aircraft parked in the terminal have access to passenger boarding bridges. The promoters also plan to have a 308-room business hotel on the airport campus during the initial stage of construction.
In addition, plans are also afoot to have a city check-in facility at Begumpet and Secunderabad railway stations. Besides, an elevated expressway is planned to help passengers reach the city centre, the completion of which will allow passengers to reach the city centre within 30 minutes of leaving the airport.
Discussions are also being held with the state government to provide mono-rail and multi-modal transportation systems for travelling to and from the airport.

———-A recent report————-
Hyderabad, Aug. 16: The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad will start functioning from March 2 next year. At the stroke of the midnight hour, the Begumpet airport will fall silent. Operations will formally shift to the new airport from 12.01 am. Sources said the Hyderabad International Airport Limited conveyed its readiness to start operations at Shamshabad from March 2 to the Airport Authority of India and the government.
?The first flight will land on the newly built 4.62 km long runway in November for a trial run,? a senior official said. The Director General of Civil Aviation will issue a notification on the date of commencement of operations. ?Pilots will then be informed of the new flight path,? said the official. Transfer of operations will be done with so much precision that flights will be controlled by the Begumpet Air Traffic Control before 12 am and by the new ATC at Shamshabad after that. HIAL has engaged Munich Airport International, a specialist in transfer of operations, for this. It had shifted airports at Munich, Athens and Bangkok.
