What is AR Rahman really good at? Arziyan from Delhi 6…

by wiredbeats on January 15, 2009

I ask myself several times. What is AR Rahman really good at? Yes he composes great music and recently he became the first Indian to win the Golden Globe Awards for his sound track in Slumdog Millionaire. Needless to say, i am a huge fan of AR and i have all his CDs released till date.

For someone like me who has ARR’s tracks on fingertips, i have asked myself the fundamental question of what he does best in music. I did answer this question several times and i am convinced that AR Rahman is best when he does a devotional sufi track. There is a devine aura to the manner he treats a devotional track, which is usually missing in his dance hall creations.

I was totally shaken by the effect that qawwalli in the OST of Meenaxi – A Tale of 3 cities, it called Noor-un-ala. Then he did Haji Ali, then few more untill recently in Delhi – 6. The track is called Arziyan (Maula Maula) and by god this is one more masterpiece by the grandmaster himself.

It has the same effect that Kwaja Mere Kwaja from Jodha Akbar had – a sort of trance. Treat yourself to the next big thing from the spiritual side of AR.

” Maula, maula, maula… mere maula

Maula, maula, maula… mere maula

Maula, maula, maula… maula

Maula, maula, maula… maula

Dararen dararen hain maathe pe maula

Marammat mukaddar ki kardo maula… mere maula

Tere dar pe jhuka hun, mita hun, bana hun

Tere dar pe jhuka hun, mita hun, bana hun

Maula, maula, maula… maula

Maula, maula, maula… maula

Jab teri gali aaya sach tabhi nazar aaya

Jab teri gali aaya sach tabhi nazar aaya

Maula..!! “

I an Indonesia living in the United States, and I admire AR Rahman. I've just red the news in MSN, reporting that he won the movie awards for his works in Delhi 6 then I browsed for the soundtracks in YouTube.

I wonder what is the meaning of the lyrics in Arziyan. I believe that it's a masterpiece as I saw everybody praised this song in YouTube and in various forums and blogs. Would you kindly translate it for me, and us, the non-Hindi speakers? Namaste in advance…
