Sri Kamalambike with students of Carnatic music at Wesleyan University

by wiredbeats on March 25, 2009

One of my good friends sent me a youtube link of  students of Wesleyan university performing Sri Kamalambike of Dheera Shankarabharam Raagam. Basically whites  singing a Carnatic track, perfect to the T.Almost.

Shakarabharam raagam happens to be one of the most favourite and reliable start point for many south indian composers. Ilayaraaja started it and Rahman took it to the next level. You can find countless songs of Ilayaraaja that follow Shankarbharanam, while Rahman usually mixes it with several other raagams for his anu-pallavis ( usually the cresendo portion of a song). This has made life a bit tough for the purists, because rahman not only mixes it, he adds several layers of synths, basslines and chorus that give this ambient appeal, but the underlying backbone is a derivative of the Shankarbharanam Raagam, or any other Raagam. You have heard it, you just don’t know which one was it.   [click to continue...]

Masakali – The Rock Show Edit Mix

by wiredbeats on March 22, 2009

Yo!

Delhi 6When it comes to making a killer track on a beautiful lady, there is only one man here in india. You know who! Be it Aditi,Urvasi,Rukumani, Cindrella or any other metaphor, Rahman succeeds gracefully in getting it into the poetic lexicon. And now its Masakali. An innocent track with a pigeon as a prop is buzzing the nation’s speaker systems.Needless to say there are countless remix versions blasting through woofers and tweeters. I have heard to some 35 odd remixes of Masakali and they also sounded the same! Same four-bar beats, same trance synths and same everything else.

Well, then i decided to put my pea brain on a overdrive and make a real unique mix. This is a rock show version. A real thumpy, edgy rock feel with a  brand new interlude.Something i started to do offlate and you guys seemed to have loved it. [click to continue...]

Taal : Ishq Bina : The Platonic Edit Mix

by wiredbeats on March 14, 2009

Its been 10 years since Taal released and the music still feels ahead of time..eventually i caught up with the art of music appreciation and production…its been 10 years. I vividly remember where i was and what i was doing when i first heard the music of Taal. It had this powerful effect with the reverb and poetic feel that its been 10 years since i heard something as amazing. Esply the Ishq Bina track. Remember.. the bass guitar groove..remember the ambient sound..remember the shrill voice..remember??

Taal has a special place. The music released just 2 days before my birthday on June 10th and everyone i knew had bought an audio cassette of the soundtrack to give it to me as a present. On 10th i was left with 11 copies of the audio cassette, apart from the one i bought for me on the release day . None of the 11 who presented me the Taal cassette know about this.
