Guzarish – The Absurd Alternate Mix. A take on 80s style of arrangement

by wiredbeats on August 19, 2009

I remember few weeks ago me and my friends had a short discussion on how the simplest track from Rahman’s Gajini became the most popular. Guzarish has a simple melody and an equally simple arrangement by Rahman’s standards. Somehow the song sounded fresh, may be it is the voice or just that the track de-cluttered itself from some of the ‘loud’ bhangra tracks belted out by the likes of Pritam.
We spoke about how Guzarish was very ‘bollywoodish’ in its essence. We wondered how other contemporary music composers if the 80s would have done it. Same tune, but a very bollywood style dholak and jhankar beats!
So here I present a unique or rather absurd version of Guzarish – The Absurd alternate mix. A parody take on how 80s style music directors would have done Guzarish.
By the way, don’t judge me by this ‘absurd’ mix. I have changed the groove of the original tracks in a decent way.
Sample these two if you will

This is funny! But lives upto the beat of the 80's and 90's.

Totally confusing….as long as you experimented for fun – good. Lets still call it a 'failed experiment' :) BTW I'd say Gumsum (Ada) is the totally bollywoodish song ever done by ARR.

Hey WB, I've been listening to your works for long time. Man, you are a cut to cut professional in sound editing and mixing! I always recommend your works to friends and almost every time they appreciate the ideas like I do! Well, I wanted to ask you, do you recreate the stuff all yourself? Maybe on synthesizers?

Talking about Guzarish, I liked the way Tabla plays. The accompanying rhythm gels so well. The song sounds a little fast, maybe you can consider bringing it to a little lower scale. The strings-like instrument reminds of R.D.Burman kind of arrangements. Tabla is the real key here, which brings the Laxmikant Pyarelal effect. And I like it. Listening it right now, and liking it a lot. Thanks for all your works.

I like it. I'm impressed by the alternating between the pure table and full-on-dholak beats. The beatless beginning of each mukhda is good too. It may not be as good as some of your other remixes, but experimentation is always good. It's like how you make a point that even though the instruments have changed, basic Bollywood music still remains the same. The beats and lyrics are like clothes. Kudos!
Another very Bollywood'ish song is Baazi Laga from Guru.

excatly Baazi Laga is such a typical bollywood track.

thanks man. glad you like my work. Usually i use VSTs and samples. Tabla etc has to be samples. Some are available loops while few are sampled from other film songs. Since i am not selling these mixes, i am ok with ‘stealing’ beats from elsewhere!!. Enjoy and explore more! thanks again.
