The theme song of the World Classical Tamil Conference, written by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and set to music by maestro A. R. Rahman. The song captures the essential aspects of various great Tamil literary works, including those from the Sangam Age.

It features 70 singers drawn from both classical and popular streams of music.

The 5.5-minute song is featured as streaming media and as a downloadable mp3 file on the website.

Filmed by Gautam Vasudev Menon, the song begins with veteran singer T.M. Soundararajan rendering the lines ‘Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum.’

It brings out the melodious blending of the traditional Tamil nagaswaram and tavil with the guitar and drums. To emphasise the greatness of classical Tamil, the line, ‘Semmozhiyaana Tamizh mozhiyaam,’ runs through the song. In seeking to capture the spirit of the hoary language, Mr. Karunanidhi has included references to the works of Tholkapiyar, Thiruvalluvar, Kamban and Ilango Adigal.

The World Classical Tamil Conference, to be held in Coimbatore from June 23 to June 27, will begin with the rendering of this theme song. Mr. Karunanidhi formally launched the song in Chennai on May 15.
